‘Without You’ is from Silverchair’s ‘Diorama’ album.
The song is mostly in 6/8 time, making use of the toms, snare rolls and a range of fills.
The outro alternates between 4/4 and 5/4 time.
Monster
After drummer Zac Farro left the band, guitarist Taylor York stepped up to record not only the guitar parts for the new Paramore single ‘Monster’, but also the drum parts.
‘Monster’ which is featured on the Transformers movie ‘Dark Of The Moon’ displays Taylor’s impressive drumming skills.

Come As You Are
Video number 7 is a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’.
The drum part has three main patterns, each with variations.
Master these patterns slowly first and then work up the tempo with a click until you can get to 120bpm.
After you master the patterns the variations can be added much easier.

Assassin
My latest drum cover / transcription is ‘Assassin’ by Muse.
This is another difficult one to master.
The bass drum work in the intro is intricate and fast, but a great work out for your single pedal technique.
There are also some great fills like the triplets at the end of the intro and the 32nd notes in various places throughout the song.
I’d recommend using a tool such as Apple’s Quicktime player to slow down the song while you learn it.

Anthem Part Two
Here’s one for the advanced students.
Travis Barker is seriously one of the most creative drummers on the rock/punk scene.
I love working out and playing his drum parts.
This song has some really challenging parts, so take it slow and work on them one section at a time.
I might even do a tutorial video on this song to slow it down and demonstrate the parts. Keep an eye out for that in the future!

Smells Like Teen Spirit
This is the song that defined the 1990s rock scene, and ushered in the whole grunge/alternative genre.
Dave Grohl’s opening fill is one of the most instantly recognisable drum fills ever.
The main drum groove is a bass-heavy boogaloo beat with quarter notes on the hi hat to create space and heaviness.
The verse sections are straighter and in contrast to the louder heavier beats from the intro and chorus. Nirvana were well known for the use of loud-soft-loud dynamics, as seen in Smells Like Teen Spirit.

What I’ve Done Drum Cover
I decided to start recording some videos of the songs I teach to my students so that they can watch them at home while they practice.
The first one is ‘What I’ve Done’ by Linkin Park.
I hope you find it helpful.
Check out the transcription I made of this song.
James Gadson
A friend of mine sent me this youtube video recently and I had to share it.
James Gadson lays down a funky groove with no fills and it sounds amazing!
At first glance it may seem easy, but just try keeping that groove going the whole way through the song without playing any fills – and you’ll begin to see what an amazing performance this is.
